Hot Salon: Black The Salon

By Ryan Patrick Hooper Aug 4, 2009, 13:51

Resting on Fourth Street in downtown Royal Oak is Black The Salon. Snuggled tightly between Ernie’s Pizza and the Royal Oak Music Theatre, the brand new (only 7-weeks-old) salon has already planted its roots via its approach to the salon’s sparse interior design and handling of clientele — skip the pretensions.

“What we’ve created here is a little more of an inviting atmosphere,” explains owner Jeph Wright, who has great shoulder-length dreads and a laid-back demeanor. “We wanted a warmer appeal so people don’t feel that whole ‘I gotta dress cool, I gotta be cool’ to come here. [This salon] is come-as-you-are, and we will always treat you as one of our own.” Immediately after speaking to the salon’s philosophy, Wright’s choice of décor quickly reaffirms the thought process that went into Black The Salon. Instead of pseudo-industrial stainless steel workstations under every mirror, Wright chose large, black Craftsman toolboxes for each one of his stylists. The mirrors themselves are wrapped in large, mat black frames and the rinse basins positioned toward the back-end of the salon are simplistic yet sleek. No one particular design element of the salon fights for attention … but rather complements one another. “When I spin someone around in their chair and they see themselves in the mirror for the first time,” continues Wright, “I want them to think about how beautiful they look — not how they need to wear more make-up to look like everyone else.”
